Sensei Brian went over five techniques tonight:

Uchi-Mata (Stiff Arm Variation):
We practiced this throw with the uke stiff arming the tori. The way he showed us to get around this was to step off to the side and just hook the shin area of the uke with your foot and lift the same way you would for a normal uchi-mata. Remember to use your hands to complete the throw.

Uki-Goshi (Dominant Grip Variation):
We practiced this technique with the uke getting a dominant over the shoulder grip on the tori and pressing them downward. The way to counteract this was to step in for uki-goshi and drive your pelvis forward, then throw with uki-goshi.

Seio-Nage:
Standard throwing practice.

A key point he made during practice was to make sure when you squat down that your knees flare out to the sides, not just bend straight. This gives you a lot more control, power, and balance.

You can demonstrate this by having someone squat down with their knees straight then pulling on their belt, they'll fall backwards. Try the same thing when their knees are pointing outward and they won't budge an inch.

Sankaku-Jime:
Standard choking practice with an emphasis on controlling the uke with your feet. Make sure you keep one leg on their leg, or hip area to prevent them from standing up. If they're really strong, or get up closer to you, you can swing off to the side and keep the choke applied.

Various Armbar Drills:
We practiced transitioning from ude-garame, to ude-gatame, then to waki-gatame as the uke changed position. We do this all the time with Andrew.
