Sensei Shane went over a number of techniques tonight starting with three throwing techniques then a number of combination techniques.
Standalone Throwing Techniques:
Harai-Goshi (or Harai-Makikomi if you prefer):
Standard throwing practice.
Harai-Goshi Gaeshi:
This is the counter technique to harai-goshi.
As your partner attacks with harai-goshi you block it by lowering your hips and grabbing their belt. You then spring up and twist counterclockwise while lifting them up slightly with your hands and sweeping out their left foot with your left foot.
O-Soto-Gari:
Standard throwing practice.
Combination Techniques:
Harai-Goshi > O-Soto-Gari:
You attack with harai-goshi and your partner blocks/resists it. You then hop around on one foot and throw them with o-soto-gari.
Harai-Goshi > Harai-Goshi-Gaeshi > O-Soto-Gari:
When you attack your partner with harai-goshi they block it and try to throw you with harai-goshi-gaeshi, but it fails. You then hop around and throw them with o-soto-gari..
Harai-Goshi > Harai-Goshi-Gaeshi > O-Soto-Gari > Juji-Gatame
Follow the same combination as before then immediately apply juji-gatame after you throw your partner.
Harai-Goshi > Harai-Goshi-Gaeshi > O-Soto-Gari > Juji-Gatame > Yoko-Shiho-Gatame:
This time when you try to apply juji-gatame your partner escapes by quickly rolling toward you and removing their arm from between your legs before you have it bent. They then pin you down with yoko-shiho-gatame.
• When you're doing the juji-gatame escape, make sure you also get your head out from between your partner's legs or they may apply sankaku-jime on you.
Harai-Goshi > Harai-Goshi-Gaeshi > O-Soto-Gari > Juji-Gatame > Yoko-Shiho-Gatame > Counter:
This time when your partner pins you with yoko-shiho-gatame you roll/push up toward them in the direction of their legs. When they push you back down you quickly roll in the opposite direction and flip them over using your arms and the momentum of the movement. You finish the combination by applying your own yoko-shiho-gatame.
• For the escape to be effective you must roll very quickly so you use your partner's momentum against them.
